Alice joined our family on April 30, 2016, when she was 16 months old. She had spent her formative months isolated in a kennel with minimal human interaction. As a result, her emotional development was stunted. She had never been off her (previous) property, and the sight of a leash would cause her to cower and urinate.
Alice is untrusting of strangers until she is allowed to assess them on her terms. She has acclimated to life as a housedog and family member and has come to worship the refrigerator. Alice enjoys her soft bed and appreciates the air conditioning. She still detests leaving the safety of her property, though she now accepts a leash.
Alice is a sweet, gentle, fragile soul. Instead of forcing her to change, I have accepted her the way she is. She is happiest at home surrounded by family. She adjusts to our few visitors, but if uncomfortable, she can find a safe place to curl up and wait out the intruder. I don’t force Alice into stressful situations. I choose to celebrate her loving nature and am grateful she has chosen to trust me.
Alice is my butterfly, beautiful and delicate.
